John W. Sugden, Architect, FAIA
John William Sugden III (1922–2003) was a highly influential modernist architect and educator in Utah, recognized for introducing and developing International Style modernism in the region. He studied under prominent Bauhaus figures Mies van der Rohe and Ludwig Hilberseimer at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and contributed to iconic projects such as the Farnsworth House and Seagram Building before returning to Utah to establish his own practice. Sugden’s work is characterized by its simple geometric forms, rigorous technical precision, inventive use of steel and glass, and a seamless integration of indoor-outdoor spaces. Key projects include the Roberta Sugden House and multiple public buildings.In addition to his professional achievements, Sugden taught for over 15 years at the University of Utah’s School of Architecture, where he mentored numerous students—including Jack Smith—and fostered a tradition of modernist design in the state.
